Mission Statement:

To assist every enrolled student to improve skills, explore musical styles, and expand the knowledge of and appreciation for an increasing range of musical literature while continuing to develop the attitudes and behaviors of being a successful participating member of a performing ensemble.

Course Catalog Requirements for Band Classes ~ 2009-2010

Jazz Ensemble

Open to: 9, 10, 11, 12 ~ Full Year Course
Prerequisite:  Audition & Membership in Percussion, Symphonic Band or Wind Ensemble

Students will study techniques, skills, and styles of jazz as applied to the twenty-member ensemble.  Enrollment requires audition, consent of the instructor, and simultaneous enrollment in one of the concert groups.  Instrumentation must include five saxophones, ten brass, and a five-piece rhythm section.  Students are expected to be serious, competent musicians with enthusiasm for performing.  They will perform at several jazz concerts and festivals throughout the northwest.  A full year of this class is designed to prepare students to pass the Arts assessment at the benchmark 3 level now required by the state for high school graduation.

Marching Band (7th period) .25 credit

Open to: 9, 10, 11, 12 ~ One Semester or Full Year Course
Prerequisite:  Concurrent enrollment in any music class.

Since all rehearsals and performances are held outside regular school hours, students must be willing and able to put in approximately ten hours per week during marching band season and to maintain the high standards, which have been established at Auburn High School.  All participants are required to attend the band camp before school starts.  Fund-raising projects will be provided to assist students in earning the funds necessary for participation in marching band.  Students will perform at all home football games, several parades and field show competitions, and other school and community functions.

Percussion - Beginning

Open to:  9, 10, 11, 12 ~ Full Year Course
Prerequisite:  Teacher's signature

Percussion students will learn and perfect fundamental percussion techniques to be performed with the band and as percussion ensembles.  Enrollment, subject to the approval of the instructor, will be restricted to approximately 25 students.  This class will serve as the percussion section for Symphonic Band.  A basic ability to read piano music is strongly encouraged, but not required.

Percussion - Advanced

Open to: 9, 10, 11, 12 ~ Full Year Course
Prerequisite:  Teacher's signature & audition

Percussion students will learn and perfect fundamental percussion techniques to be performed with the band and as percussion ensembles.  Enrollment, subject to the approval of the instructor, will be restricted to approximately 25 students.  This class will serve as the percussion section for the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and Orchestra.  A full year of this class is designed to prepare students to pass the Arts assessment at the benchmark 3 level now required by the state for high school graduation.

Symphonic Band

Open to: 9, 10, 11, 12 ~ Full Year Course
Prerequisite:  Teacher's signature

Students will continue to develop skills and understandings of music performance at the advanced level.  Students will rehearse daily in class and play at all scheduled concerts and other performances held during the year.  They are expected to maintain a daily home practice schedule 2 hours/week is minimum and participate in schedule sectional rehearsals.  Performance tests will be given periodically to monitor student progress.  Music selected will be for the large symphonic ensemble.  Concert attire is required.  A full year of this class is designed to prepare students to pass the Arts assessment at the benchmark 3 level now required by the state for high school graduation.

Wind Ensemble

Open to: 9, 10, 11, 12 ~ Full Year Course
Prerequisite:  Teacher's signature & audition

The Wind Ensemble is comprised of the most outstanding wind players at Auburn High School.  Enrollment prerequisite includes an audition by the music instructor who will select a balanced instrumentation of approximately 40 members.  Members are expected to maintain a rigorous daily home practice schedule and to participate in all scheduled section rehearsals and performances.  Performance tests will be given periodically to monitor student progress.  A full year of this class is designed to prepare students to pass the Arts assessment at the benchmark 3 level now required by the state for high school graduation.
