Auburn Senior High School Bands

Band Program & Classes Offered

Percussion Ensembles

Percussion Ensemble is an exciting and unique band class offered at Auburn High School.  This class allows students to broaden their skills in the world of percussion.  Students are introduced to a large variety of percussion instruments seen around the world as well as the techniques and rhythms that accompany them.  After mastering the art of percussion, these students may perform with the Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra.  In addition, the percussionists perform in Percussion Ensembles that are often seen going to the WMEA State Solo & Ensemble contest and performing for school functions.

Jazz Band

Jazz Band at Auburn is a great place to learn the essentials of jazz. Students are trained in improvisation, and have the opportunity to perform blues, ragtime, bebop, Latin, and bluegrass style jazz at several competitions and festivals throughout the year. Because spontaneity and experimentation are encouraged, students should be skilled enough with their instrument to comfortably create their own music. Admission to jazz band is at the discretion of the teacher after auditioning  and participation in at least one other musical ensemble is required.

Symphonic Band

In Symphonic Band, students develop skills and an understanding of music  at an advanced level. These students  rehearse daily in class and play in  concerts and competitions throughout the year. They are expected to maintain a daily home practice of at least two hours a week. A full year of this class is designed to prepare students to pass the Arts Assessment at the level three benchmark now required for high school graduation. The Symphonic Band at Auburn has also participates in community and school events. It is open to musicians of all levels who want to have fun and learn how to create quality music. By participating in Symphonic Band, musicians also have the opportunity to join Jazz Band, Marching Band, and Pit Orchestra (providing live music for the school drama program).

Wind Ensemble

Wind Ensemble is the premier, audition-only band at Auburn High School.   It is composed of students who excel in musicianship and leadership. These student musicians are expected to practice several times a week and to study with a private instructor.  In return for their hard work and dedication, the students are able to compete in several festival events and go on trips throughout the year.  These excellent young musicians have a proud reputation at Regional and STATE Solo and Ensemble Contests, as well as , with at least one student or ensemble receiving an award nearly every year.

Marching Band

All band students are encouraged to join marching band.  It's a great place to meet new friends, play good music and have fun!   Bring your instrument, wear good athletic shoes and be prepared to march outside.  Marching Band performs at all home football games including Homecoming and competes in marching band competitions in the fall.

Pep Band

All band students are required to participate in Pep Band for seven out of ten home basketball games.  Band Parents will provide Pep Band shirts for purchase after the first rehearsal.  Pep Band travels to basketball playoff games when scheduled.

Pit Orchestra

Pit Orchestra is made up of Band and Orchestra students who perform as a group for the school musical.   Rehearsals start in late January and continue through the second week in March.  Pit Orchestra is conducted by Mr. Johnson, Orchestra Director and Mr. Tanaka, Band Director.   The School Musical is the second two weekends in March.  Pit Orchestra attire is all black (black shirt and/or black pants/skirt).
